Allyn and Cathy Stanton of St. Louis began searching for a mountain retreat years ago. Traveling throughout western North Carolina, touring properties and hearing numerous sales pitches, time and again, they found many of the properties didn’t live up to the advertising.
After four weeks on the road in 2007, they discovered The Headwaters at Banner Elk, N.C. Although they had decided on another community during their trip, they fell in love with The Headwaters and quickly canceled their commitment to the other developer. They had been looking for a place that was upscale yet relaxed, secluded but convenient to daily services and fine dining. They found it upon touring the property with developer John Haynes.
“Allyn and Cathy travel a lot for business, but can work from anywhere,” says Haynes. “Our certified fiber optic status was a big selling point because they can stay connected with their sales associates, yet enjoy pristine long range views from their spacious villa.” They were looking for a maintenance-free lifestyle, yet the qualities of a single-family custom home. They now enjoy their two bedroom condominium villa so much that they schedule their travel plans so they can spend as much time as possible at the property.

That Secure Feeling: The Gate House is staffed seven days a week, ensuring the privacy of each resident.
Seasonal Sensations: With snow skiing in the winter, hiking in the spring, water sports in the summer and leaf season in the fall, the area is truly a year-round playground.
Join the Club: Allyn is looking forward to the summer ‘08 completion of the mountaintop clubhouse with its “gourmet kitchen on steroids” and state-of-the-art 16-seat theater complete with 106-inch screen. He is a serious amateur chef and looks forward to entertaining guests in the great room of the clubhouse with its 28-foot ceiling and 200-degree view of the mountains. The theater will provide a wonderful venue for watching sporting events and munching on popcorn. The clubhouse also will feature a game room for the kids and a state-of-the-art fitness center for adults. The clubhouse will also be staffed with a concierge to make sure property owners’ needs are met.
The Nature of Things: Cathy says, “John has put so much thought into the land plan that it seems that every time you round a corner, there’s another park or hide out that makes you say ‘Oh wow!’ We love walking through all the parks and trails around the lakes with our dog Tosh.” Haynes has already built six master-planned parks including one with two, two-story tree houses. Tosh seems especially fond of the two lakes and waterfalls. Close to the entrance, one will find the 50-foot cascading Falls Creek Falls and 1.5-mile trail network that leads to the lakes.
Relax and Rejuvenate: Cathy is intrigued by the intimate spa that Haynes is building next to the clubhouse. This facility will feature a massage therapy room with two tables, a luxurious bath with steam shower and body sprays along with a tub room with two-air jet soaking tubs. The tubs are positioned in the room with a 14-foot wide window wall so one can enjoy the view to the outside, yet positioned in a way that no one can see in. The spa building will be available by reservation for adults only so it will be a private haven for Headwaters property owners.
Location is Everything: The Headwaters’ close proximity to the upscale resort town of Banner Elk is a major plus. Banner Elk is home to Lees McRae College, which provides concerts and live theater throughout the year. “I can’t say enough good things about the college,” says Haynes. “Lees McRae is a gem. Imagine coming up to Headwaters for a visit, then enjoying a first class dinner out on the town at one of a dozen upscale restaurants, followed by a top quality play or concert.”
Homes Sweet Homes: There are already a dozen custom homes built or under construction at The Headwaters.
