Bill Payne and Jacqueline Chatmon retired to Bay Creek in 2006 from New Jersey. Here, the couple shares how they fell in love with this coastal Virginia community and why they decided to make it their home.
“It’s the food and friends. The seclusion and natural beauty. And with amenities that cater to practically any lifestyle, it’s easy to see why Bay Creek quickly became so special for us. We retired to Bay Creek more than a year ago from South Orange, N.J. after many years in the workforce (he at IBM, she at several banks) and were ready to reap the rewards.”
“Though we’re not golfers, we wanted a golf community because we knew it would be beautiful to look at and live in. Plus, Bay Creek’s location on the Chesapeake Bay (just outside of downtown Norfolk) and the closeness to relatives in Virginia were factors in our choice.”
“We’re a five-minute walk from the Bay and a three-minute drive to the ocean. Bay Creek is very quiet and we’re at a stage in our life where quiet is good. On the flip side, our social life is extremely active. We’ve met and made friends with plenty of other Bay Creek couples. In fact, we participate in a five-couple gourmet cooking group. We go out to dinner, go to each others homes and we have a great deal of interaction with people who were strangers. And we’re meeting new people everyday.”

My wife and I also relocated to Cape Charles from the northeast a little over three years ago for many of the same reasons that Bill and Jacqueline mentioned above. While we are only a few hours away from the hustle and mayham of our past lives, living here on the Eastern Shore we feel like we are a million miles away from it all.
